This whole process of downsizing and minimizing, has been a rather crazy up and down of emotions and physical exertion.  From sorting through our stuff and deciding what to keep, to scrubbing the interior of the airstream with scrub brushes and rags, we’ve been a team through it all.

Wedding Day

One of the main reasons we decided to live with less, sell 95% of our belongings, and hit the road, has to do with being together.  Family is so important to us, and we found that it’s easy to get caught up in the “go go go” of everyday life, that sometimes our family can take a back burner to many other things.  We want to be intentional about spending quality time with each other, our kid(s), and extended family.

The other day it was time to scrub the interior of the Airstream.  We strategically planned to do it during Paisley’s afternoon nap, and as soon as she was down we grabbed our buckets, changed clothes and were out the door.  As we scrubbed the grimy walls (there was some serious elbow grease involved) Nick and I chatted about life, our current/future adventures, Paisley, family we’d be seeing, Nick’s latest podcast info, etc.

About halfway through our scrubbing, I dipped my rag into the dirty bucket water and exclaimed “This is fun!”  It was true.  It didn’t matter that we were sweaty, sore, tired or cranky (not ME of course!).  It didn’t matter that we were in a gutted Airstream with a seemingly overwhelming amount of work ahead.  I have a feeling it wouldn’t have matter much what we were doing, we were together and loving every minute of it.

Before we were married, Nick used to tell me that we were two people walking hand-in-hand towards a common goal- Heaven.  It has since struck me that this is what God intended for us – To be together when possible, whatever the task He gives us, walking towards a common goal in HIm.

I’m sure I’ll be learning a lot more in our journey towards intentional, simple living, but I’m glad that I’m beginning to realize how important Lesson #1 has been:  Together Is Better!   I’m looking forward to the time that we will free up with less possessions. Spending that time with each other, with family, TOGETHER!
